LA VERNE, CA — Nathaniel Sagastume has been named SCIAC Football Offensive Athlete of the Week the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced Monday.
Sagastume was instrumental in the Leopards' 20-17 overtime win over the defending SCIAC champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags. The slot receiver made the biggest play of the game in overtime with La Verne training 17-14. On fourth and eight from the CMS 23 yard line, the junior broke loose from his defender and made a diving catch in the endzone for the win.
Sagastume made big play after big play in the game. In the fourth quarter with the Leopards trailing by eight, he caught a 20-yard pass to keep the Leopards' drive alive. After La Verne scored to get to within two points, Sagastume caught the game-tying two-point conversion to force overtime. Sagastume finished the game with four receptions for 56 yards to help La Verne open SCIAC play 1-0.
This is the third time this season a Leopard has earned SCIAC Football Athlete of the Week honors. Arturo Herrera-Caballero has twice earned SCIAC Specialist of the Week honors for his performances against Willamette and Whitworth.
