Leopards Fall to First Place Redlands

REDLANDS, CA — Jazzlyn Johnson scored 17 points and the University of La Verne women's basketball team held a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

But the Bulldogs recovered with a big second quarter and pulled away in the third to beat the Leopards 83-64.

Johnson got to the free-throw line often, scoring 11 of her 14 attempts to go with two rebounds and two assists. 

Dejanee Gill totaled 12 points, three rebounds, and one assist. Destinee Garcia nearly notched a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds and nine rebounds with three steals and two assists.

Brittany McDaniel added a season-high four blocks to go with eight points and five rebounds. Rachel Gafford finished six points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

The Bulldogs were led by Alyssa Downs;17 points and Cassandra Lacey's 16 points.

Season Impact

With Saturday's result, the Leopards move into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference with Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. La Verne now stands at 11-5 overall and 4-4 in the SCIAC. Redlands improves to 14-4 overall and 9-0 in conference play.

Next Game

The Leopards play an important home game against Pomona-Pitzer this Wednesday, January 29 at 7 p.m.
