DAY TWO RECAP

OVERVIEW

Perennially one of the strongest conferences in Division III, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference once again has shown tremendous talent and quality with four squads ranked in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 30 Poll heading into the championships:

 

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (No. 2)

Redlands (No. 9)

Pomona-Pitzer (No. 14)

La Verne (No. 29)

 

CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS:  With a 25-0 regular season record and an 8-0 mark in SCIAC, the second-ranked Athenas wrapped up the team's third consecutive SCIAC regular season title and the No. 1 seed. The Athenas are led by senior Kristin Lim who is unbeaten in singles in 2013 and is the top-ranked singles player in the West Region and she is also ranked second in doubles with teammate Abby Haley. The doubles team of junior Crystal Lim and freshman Caroline Ward is currently ranked seventh in the West Region.

POMONA-PITZER:  The season has been a series of streaks for the No. 14 Sagehens.  The squad opened with seven straight victories, followed by five consecutive losses, and concluded with a five-match win streak.  Pomona-Pitzer secured the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament with a 6-3 win over Redlands.  In singles, Samantha Chao and Jamie Solomon are ranked No. 13 and No. 14, respectively, in the West Region with the doubles team of Chao and Kara Wang ranked No. 5 regionally.

REDLANDS:  The Bulldogs, ranked No. 9 nationally, opened the season in impressive fashion by winning their first 15 matches and enter the SCIAC Championships ranked No. 2 in the West Region behind CMS.  Jessica Ly is ranked No. 5 in singles in the West Region. The tandem of Ly and Ceara Sumida are the top ranked doubles team in the West.  Natalie Etchegaray has been a force for the Bulldog squad in both singles and doubles.  She ranks No. 15 in the West in singles and with teammate Julia Pollack ranks No. 8 in doubles.

LA VERNE:  It's been an unprecedented year for the Leopards, who earned their first national ranking and double-digit win season in 2013 under head coach Yolanda Duron.  Freshman Andrea Madrigal has helped bolster the Leopard squad, validated by her No. 7 West Region ranking in singles.  Jeanette Losaria has also impressed in singles play and is ranked No. 23 in the region.  Losaria and teammate Laina Matsuda represent the Leopards' top doubles team and rank No. 9 in the West.
  

WHITTIER:  The Poets notched four league victories on the season and are led by freshman Meagan Zamilpa, who is ranked No. 10 in singles in the West Region.  The doubles team of Zamilpa and Liliana Serylo has enjoyed success this season and are currently ranked No. 13 in the region.

CHAPMAN:  In their first year competing in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Panthers recorded three victories in league play.  Freshman Andrea Hammer ranks No. 21 in singles in the West Region while the team of Hammer and junior Kelly Klebenow rank No. 12 regionally in doubles.

CAL LUTHERAN:  The Regals slipped from 12 wins in 2012 to five this season and enter this weekend's tournament as the No. 7 seed.  CLU posted league victories this season over Occidenal and Caltech.  Emily Werman has posted a team-high seven wins in singles play this year, including four in league competition. 

CALTECH: The Beavers topped Occidental in the play-in match on April 30 to qualify for the SCIAC Championships.  Caltech features a talented duo of freshman Monica Li and junior Rebekah Kitto, who rank No. 17 and No. 18, respectively, in latest ITA West Region singles rankings.
