Baseball Edged by Sagehens in Series Opener

LA VERNE, CA — The Leopards finished with 12 hits but couldn't get enough runs across the plate to overcome an early deficit and fell to Pomona-Pitzer 9-5.

Jacob Barriga, Patrick Keller, and Brandon Shiota each finished with two hits. John Bike, Jacob Benson, and Drew Reddick added one RBI apiece. Benson and Bike each hit a triple

Keller led the Leopards with two runs and continued to showcase his talent on the basepath. In the third inning with Keller on first base, the junior capitalized off a failed pick-off attempt that sailed past the first baseman and raced around the bases to cut the Leopards' deficit to 4-2.

The Sagehens took 4-1 lead midway through the third inning after a Ryan Nishi hit a double with the bases loaded and brought in all three runners.

The Leopards briefly tied the game in the fourth off Bike's triple that scored Tanner Siffert followed by Reddick's ground out RBI. But the Sagehens added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to seal the win.

La Verne moves to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 5-3 overall and 3--1 in conference play.
