Story by Sebastián Abdón Ibarra, Sports Information Student Assistant

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne football team made a statement in their return to the field and put the SCIAC on notice after a commanding 42-0 victory against the Whittier College Poets. The Leopards face a much more difficult opponent in game two when they travel to Orange to face the Chapman University Panthers in a non-conference game.

In their season opener, the Leo defense was absolutely dominant, especially in the run game where the Poets rushed for negative five yards on 13 attempts, and the offense secured the ball and scored on nearly every opportunity. The secondary for La Verne was also nothing to scoff at as Poet quarterback Andrew Henriquez only averaged 4.1 yards per attempt and was picked off by Mason Montanez, Raymond Moronez, and linebacker Derek Guzman. The Leopards also won the turnover battle 4-0, which they should hope to continue to do as the season progresses.

La Verne must now prove that they can compete with a potential playoff team. The Panthers should be the favorite to win SCIAC this season as they finished the 2019 season an undefeated 7-0 in conference play, and come into Saturday's game as the ranked 18th nationally by D3football.com.

The La Verne defensive line's ability to stop Chapman's rushing attack should be the major key in securing a road win. In Chapman's season opener against Pacific University, the Panthers averaged 7.3 yards per carry, while throwing for 145 yards. Stopping the run and forcing the Panthers to pass the ball should be very important for the Leos. The trio of Tyler Le, Khary Sanders, and Ben Sullivan each notched a sack last week and are looking to impress again by getting to the quarterback and stopping the run.

However, the same could be said for the Panthers' defensive line as they held Pacific to 1.8 yards per carry. So look for the Leopards to lean on the quarterback duo of Miguel Aguero Jr. and Tyrone Williams Jr. and receivers Spencer Spool and Nathaniel Sagastume to open up the game.

Saturday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wilson Field in the city of Orange.
