Men’s Basketball takes on Division I Boise State in exhibition

BOISE, Idaho — The University of La Verne men's basketball team hung with NCAA Division I Boise State early but eventually fell to the Broncos, 92-60, in an exhibition game on Saturday at Taco Bell Arena.

Nicholas Lewis and Evan Roberts both had good showings for the Leopards, each shooting an identical 5 of 10 from the field and notching double-digit points. Roberts finished with a team-high 13 points and Lewis ended with 12.

La Verne kept up with Boise State for the first five minutes of the game as Lewis and Kendall McClain drained a couple of threes and Paul Titchener hit a layup to open the game.

A Roberts midrange jumper got the Leopards within 15-10, but the Broncos went on a 14-0 run to pull away and never looked back.

But the Leopards never stopped fighting. At one point in the first half, La Verne ripped off a 10-0 run keyed by McClain's five points get back within 36-25. But Boise State answered with another big run to take a 47-28 lead into the break.

La Verne shot 8 of 20 from beyond the arc in the second half, but could not overcome its side advantage inside. The Broncos led by as many as 37 points late in the second half, taking advantage of inside play and shooting .654.

Hakim Arnold was solid in the second half for La Verne. Arnold started the game on the bench, but played 18 minutes in the second half and pitched in six points on 3 of 4 shooting. The sophomore finished the game with eight points and four rebounds.

Anthony White and Cruz Mertens each hit a pair of three pointers in the second half and finished with six and seven points, respectively.

The Leopards now have 20 days to prepare for their season opener on Nov. 21 at Willamette.
