KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Four members of the University of La Verne men's basketball were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for excelling in the classroom this past season.
Niall Harrison, Weston Newell, Brett Stephan and Josiah Sukumaran were among a record number of 1,000 student-athletes from more than 350 colleges and universities.
In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows.
- Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player
- Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2014-15 academic year.
- Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
- Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach
Harrison started 24 games and averaged 5.1 points per game on 51 percent shooting and pulled down 4.5 rebounds per game.
Newell and Stephan were first options off the bench for La Verne. Newell averaged 3.3 points to go along with three rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game while Stephan averaged 5.7 points per game.
Sukumaran was as one of the best rebounders in the SCIAC this season. The senior collected 8.1 rebounds per game in conference play, which was good for third individually.
