Men’s Soccer Starts Slow, Blitzed at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. — Lorenzo Leyva scored a wonder goal in the 79th minute, but it came with the game all but decided as the University of La Verne men's soccer team lost to Chapman, 5-1, on Monday night at Wilson Field.

How it happened: Leyva had the ball on the left side just past the half line and saw Chapman goalkeeper Yuki Schafer cheating towards the ball. He lofted a perfect shot from about 40 yards over Schafer and into the net to get the Leopards on the board.

But it was far too little and much too late.

The Leopards never got into a rhythm and Chapman pounced early. In the fifth minute, Marco Saglimbeni dribbled up the right side and drove in what looked like a cross to the far post. But the ball caught La Verne goalkeeper Greg Veron off guard and found its way into the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Saglimbeni struck again just four minutes later when he converted a headed pass from Boston Kimmel past Veron.

The Panthers never let up. Gino Belassen scored in the 31st minute and Cole Peters beat a couple of defenders for Chapman's fourth goal in the 39th minute to put La Verne in a 4-0 hole.

The Leopards got a chance to stem the tide in the 43rd minute when Nick Gonsalves drew a penalty, but even that fell through as Justin Almandinger's shot was saved by Nick Berardi.

Belassen added his second tally four minutes in the half to give Chapman a 5-0 lead. He finished with eight total shots and put four of them on target.

Stat of the game: The final shot count tells the entire story. The Panthers outshot the Leopards, 31-4, and put 15 of those on goal.

Chapman also earned 12 corner kicks to La Verne's 0 which encapsulated their dominance in the game.

Players of the game: Darrin Bangle relieved Veron with just over 30 minutes in the game and did an admirable job in net. Even with a five-goal lead in hand, the Panthers never relented and peppered the goal until the final whistle. In just 33 minutes of action, Bangle turned away six shots including a couple of diving saves.

What it means: La Verne drops to 5-6 in SCIAC play (8-6-1 overall) and falls to sixth place in SCIAC standings. But the Leopards still have two games left against teams ahead of the in the standings (Occidental, Redlands) and the remaining three games are against the bottom three.

Up next: La Verne hosts Redlands on Saturday as a part of the university's Homecoming Weekend and needs a result. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
