Women’s Basketball picks up first SCIAC win at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Emily Myers registered her fourth double-double of the season to lead the University of La Verne women's basketball to its first SCIAC victory of the season over Pomona-Pitzer, 69-55, at Voelkel Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

La Verne improves to 4-8 overall and 1-2 in SCIAC play. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 2-9 and 1-1.

Myers had a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds. Kayla Valentine and Ashley Breshears had big games off bench as they contributed 15 points and 10 points, respectively.

Myers started hot. The 5-foot-11 junior scored 12 of La Verne's first 19 points as the teams traded baskets to start the game.

La Verne took the lead for good at the 12:56 mark of the first half when a jump shot by Valentine gave the Leopards a 13-12 lead.

The Sagehens hung close for most of the half, but the Leopards made a strong push to close the half. After a Basha Brulee-Wills free throw got the Sagehens within 32-28, the Leopards made four of its last five attempts to end the half on a 9-2 run capped off by an and-one from Taylor Bolden. The run gave La Verne a 41-30 lead going into the break and the Sagehens never got closer the rest of the way.

The Leopards carried their momentum into the second half and played suffocating defense to extend the lead. Bolden picked up right where she left and opened second half with a three-pointer and La Verne forced the Sagehens to miss 15 of their first 18 shots in the half to grab the largest lead of the game, 58-39, with 9:30 left to go.

Pomona-Pitzer briefly made it interesting as it used a quick 8-0 run to get trim the lead to 11 points with 6:23 to play.

But Myers answered with two consecutive fast break baskets to put La Verne back up by 15 and the Sagehens were not able to put together another rally.

Brulee-Wills led Pomona-Pitzer with 13 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. Kacie Hitomi supplied 10 points off the bench.

Tiffany Hicks didn't score any points for La Verne, but was everywhere on the floor. The senior guard flashed good court vision and hustle to post six rebounds, four assists and five steals.

Shannon Irwin added six rebounds and six steals for La Verne.

La Verne returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Whittier (5-5, 1-1 SCIAC) for a 2 p.m. tipoff at Frantz Court.
