Women’s Basketball falls to Redlands on Senior Day

LA VERNE, Calif. — Emily Myers went off for 28 points for the University of La Verne women's basketball team, but Redlands rode 37 bench points to a 64-61 win over the Leopards at Frantz Athletic Court on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs led by six as late as 49 seconds remaining in the game, but Tiffany Hicks hit a tough jumper in the lane and a clutch three pointer to pull the Leopards within 63-61 with 23 seconds to go.

The Leopards immediately fouled after Hicks' three-pointer and put Redlands' Kaity Lykins to the line for two. Lykins hit the first of her two shots but missed the back end to give the Leopards a chance to tie the game.

Hicks got two looks at the basket. She got the ball on the right wing after the missed free throw, but missed just left. Riki Murakami snuck in for the offensive rebound and gave it back to Hicks one last chance, but the shot came up just short.

With the loss, La Verne falls to fifth place in the SCIAC standings with a 7-7 record in SCIAC play. Redlands slides into fourth place and improves to 7-6.

Myers kept the Leopards in the game with a tough basket after tough basket despite having to guard two big forwards most of the game. She finished with 28 points and six rebounds.

The Bulldogs threatened to create a big cushion early, but the Leopards closed the first half on an 11-1 run go into the break tied at 27-27. Myers started the run with a jump shot, Erika Rivera made a couple of baskets and Murakami sank four free throws during the stretch.

The teams traded baskets to begin the second half until Redlands grabbed the lead for good with a layup by Nina Newman with 5:44 to go that but the Bulldogs up, 48-47.

The Leopards never let Redlands lead by more than six, but the Bulldogs had an answer for every La Verne basket the rest of the way and held on for the crucial win.

Ta'Amu led the Bulldogs with 19 points in 17 minutes off the bench and added seven rebounds. Jade Cheldelin also chipped in 10 points off the bench and Lykins led all players with 14 rebounds.

Before the game, La Verne held a brief ceremony to honor the careers of their three seniors; Hicks, Murakami and J.J. Weaver. The Leopards also recognized junior Jasmine Bush, who hung up her jersey after multiple injuries.

La Verne returns to action at Caltech on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
