A Huge Win at Home for the Leopards

A Huge Win at Home for the Leopards

By Cyanna Rosa

La Verne, CA- The University of La Verne hosted its Ugly Sweater Double Header this Saturday at The Tents. The women's basketball team hosted LIFE Pacific for their third home game of the season. With another high-scoring game, the Leopards dominated.

Leopard, Dawson Bell, started off the afternoon with a jump shot during a sequence of rebounds from both sides of the court. With a slow start, the Leopards quickly turned gears and found their way with four minutes left, adding 14 points on the scoreboard to end the quarter with a 20-11 lead. In the second quarter, the Leopards scored 31 points; Jazzlyn Johnson scored 6 points and Dejanee Gill added 8 points during the run. The Leopards lead the Warriors 50-31 heading at halftime.

The Leopards maintained their energy for the second half. Dawson Bell had a great start with 8 points in the third quarter. To wrap up the quarter, Melissa Howell, ended with a beautiful three-pointer, making the lead 74-46.

Ending with their second-highest scoring game of the season, the Leopards showed out no differently than before. Leopards Guard Jazzlyn Johnson had a stellar night with 21 points on the scoreboard, and following her lead was starter Dejanee Gill, draining 20 points. With all the Leopards contributing to the scoreboard this afternoon, they finalized the undeniable win, 103-63.

Head coach Jason Pruitt was able to see where his team is at and where he'd like them to progress to with tonight's contest. "Let me start by saying (LPU head coach) Coach Kennedy) did a great job, had his team ready.  I watched their film before the game, and they play really hard. Played harder than we played. If you watch the game, you said, dog gone it, they played harder. The second thing he did was he put a couple things in, wrinkles, that bothered us and really got us out of rhythm in the first half.  But the hardest thing for a coach and something that shows me that, one, he's a really good coach and he's connected to his team. They're going to have a breakthrough, and they'll go on a run of games.

We had a lot of players get an opportunity tonight, now they have to take advantage. Conference is around the corner; we're going to have a couple of ladies competing for minutes. I would like to play all 15 players but that is highly unlikely. Our staff is going to have to hold our players to a high standard because they're going to be competing for minutes. Most of it will come down to are you breaking down defensively? Are you not rebounding balls? Then I have to play someone else and there's two or three of you, so whoever's the best defender, the best rebounder for that given night will get the nod.  That's my job to figure this out and make sure that we're together. We're cheering for each other, and we keep trending upward."

The women continue their season at home against Lewis & Clark this Monday, December 19th. Meet at the Tents at 4:00 PM or catch the game live, here on our website.
