The University of La Verne women's soccer team played two weekend matches at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest Tournament. The Leopards would suffer consecutive defeats, falling 1-0 to Willamette on Friday before concluding with a 2-0 defeat to Whitman on Saturday.
Against the Bearcats, the Leopards battled to a 0-0 draw in the first 40 minutes before Willamette's Malia Simpson scored the go-ahead goal with an assist from Kinsey Keene at the 41:30 mark.
Willamette's lead would hold up as the Leopards' three second-half shot attempts did not find the net, resulting in the 1-0 Bearcat triumph. Willamette enjoyed a 17-6 advantage in shots and registered six corner kicks compared to none for the Leopards.
A day later against another Northwest Conference foe in Whitman, the Leopards went into intermission in a scoreless tie.
In the second half, the Missionaries broke through with a pair of goals. Less than 10 minutes into the second frame, Whitman's Justine Kovak scored on a cross to put the Missionaries up 1-0. With just over two minutes remaining in the contest, Whitman took a 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal from Makenzie Hughes.
Whitman outshot the Leopards 23-6 for the game. La Verne goalkeeper Heather Seman tallied seven saves.
La Verne (1-3) returns home on Wednesday night to host NAIA opponent Hope International in a 7:00 pm start at Ortmayer Stadium.
