DELAWARE, Ohio — Lenore Moreno is human after all.

The two-time national champion competed in her last collegiate race in the 5,000 meters on the final day of the 2014 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday and came in ninth (16 minutes, 43.88 seconds), just missing out on the podium.

As soon as she completed the race, the senior from West Covina, Calif., fell to her knees on the track, having run nearly 10 miles in less than 48 hours.

She gave all she could. Moreno, as she has done throughout the season, jumped ahead of the pack early and stayed with the front group of defending national champion Christy Cazzola (Wisconsin-Oshkosh), Nicole Michmerhuizen (Calvin) and top seed Cara DeAngelis (Ohio Wesleyan) for most of the race.

Then with about two-and-a-half laps to go, Moreno made her move and took the lead.

But having run the grueling 10,000 meters less than two days ago, Moreno just didn't have the trademark late-race burst and could not stretch the lead. Cazzola eventually took the lead back and was able to defend her championship at 16:29.96.

Moreno won the 10,000 meters on Friday and her 10 points was good enough to place the La Verne women 23rd overall in the team standings.

Moreno concludes her college career with two national championships and four All-America honors. In 2012, she became the first La Verne woman in history to earn All-America status in cross country and then finished eighth in the 10,000 meters in last year's outdoor track and field national championships. She broke out this season, winning the indoor 5,000 meters national championship in March, which she has followed up with this weekend's performances.
