Women's Water Polo Leaves Minnesota 4-0

ST. PAUL, MN — The University of La Verne women's water polo team closed out the Macalester Invitational with two more dominant wins on Sunday.

Season Impact

The Leopards improve to 5-3 overall and gain some momentum before entering SCIAC play. La Verne's only three losses are against top-25 teams.

Game One: La Verne 22, Carthage 9

It was a true team win in Sunday's opener with an incredible 13 players getting in on the scoring.

Sumi Rudisky and Annette Aladefa led the Leopards with three goals apiece. Nanea Mattson, Lauren Holcomb, and Kelly Riedel each netted a pair of goals. Holcomb added a three of steals for the Leopards in the win. 

Nancy Trinh had a big defensive game for La Verne. The freshman registered a game-high four steals and added one goal. 

The Leopards dominated all game jumping out to a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Leopards essentially put the game away at halftime, ending the second quarter on a 8-1 run to take a 15-5 lead at the break.

Shelby Garcia got the start in the cage and picked up the win with four saves and a steal. Loreny Valdez looked sharp in the second half, finishing with a game-high five saves.

Christine Castrellon, Sona Aghasaryan, Melanie Gazazian, and Sage Nowell each scored once. Candice Vorbeck and Sam Sanchez each dealt a pair of assists. 

Game Two: La Verne 19, Macalester 8

The Leopards closed out the tournament with another commanding win. After defeating the Scots 13-7 on day one of the invite, La Verne looked even more impressive in their second win over the host team.

Trinh, just a freshman, posted her most impressive game as a Leopard. The Temple City native led all players with six goals to go with two steals and two drawn exclusions.

Jassmine Kezman had a big offensive performance in the win scoring four times along with dishing out four assists. Mattson added a hat trick to go with three steals and an assist.

Vorbeck had a solid all-around game, totaling three steals, two goals, and one assist. Ilene Guerrero added one goal.

Next Game

The Leopards play their SCIAC opener on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Redlands.
