Leos Fall to Tigers on the Road

The University of La Verne baseball team suffered a 7-3 loss to Occidental College on Sunday afternoon in Eagle Rock.

Oxy's Victor Munoz hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth for the Tiger victory.

The Tigers got on the board early scoring a run in the first inning off an RBI single by Brent Wunner. La Verne answered back in the top of the third scoring two runs. The Leos led off the inning with three singles by Mason Stoltenberg, Jacob Ludvik, and Cody Hazel to load the bases. Jason Moralez walked to score the first run. Michael Stewart followed with a sacrifice fly for the 2-1 Leopard advantage.

La Verne struck again in the top of the seventh inning. Ludvik and Hazel hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third. Moralez hit an RBI ground out to put the Leos on top 3-1.

The Tigers would knot the game at 3-3 scoring two runs off of three hits in the bottom of the eighth.

Occidental held the Leopards scoreless in the top of the ninth, and in the bottom of the frame, the Tigers loaded the bases to set the stage for Munoz, who hit his walk-off grand slam to end the game.

Ludvik went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored. Stoltenberg also went 3-for-5 and scored one run.

La Verne is in first place in the conference standings with an overall record of 23-11 and a SCIAC record of 18-5.

The Leopards continue SCIAC action tomorrow as they take on the Redlands Bulldogs.  The game will begin at 3:00 pm in Redlands.
