La Verne Splits Against North Park and Ithaca with Walk Off Win

The University of La Verne split Sunday's contests opening with a loss against North Park University followed by a walk-off win over Ithaca College at Mazmanian Field in Walnut.

In the opener, an eighth-inning three-run homer by North Park second baseman Mike Coduto would push the Vikings past the Leopards.  La Verne would threaten a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two, but would ultimately fall short 6-5.

North Park jumped out early in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on two Leopard walks as Sabin tripled to right field bringing in two to go up 2-0.  Dan Anderson would then single in Sabin to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.  La Verne would answer back in the fourth when Michael Stewart brought in Jason Moralez on a single to right center.  Mason Stoltenberg would then score on a fielder's choice after reaching on a single earlier in the inning to bring La Verne within one.

In the bottom half of the sixth La Verne would capitalize on a North Park mistake as Stewart reached on an error by the shortstop and scored after Pedro Espinosa singled to center to even up the contest 3-3.

After the homer by Carduto, the Leopards would attempt a last-inning comeback after Espinosa and Tim Ralston crossed the plate to come within one but would ultimately fall short  6-5.

In game two, La Verne would take their shot at late inning heroics, defeating Ithaca on a walk-off infield single courtesy of Michael "Woody" Reyes.  La Verne would strike in the first two frames as Reyes scored on an error by the Ithaca second baseman and Espinosa crossed the plate after Nolan Henley singled to centerfield.

Ithaca would answer back quickly with two of their own to tie it up 2-2 in the top of the third inning but the game would remain deadlocked until the bottom of the ninth.

The Leopards would put together a text-book inning in the ninth inning beginning with George Holland reaching on a walk and Dylan Leong moving pinch runner Matt Ashby over with a sacrifice bunt, putting the winning run on second base.  Pinch hitter Nicholas Bergara would be intentionally walked and eventually advance to second after pinch-hitter George Hanna singled to left-center.

The bases would now be loaded with Reyes stepping into the box. Reyes would put together a several-pitch at-bat and eventually deliver the winning run with an infield single for the victory

La Verne improves to 11-6 and will once again square off against North Park on Tuesday at Rio Hondo College at 3:00 pm.
