Leopards Complete Sweep of Poets

The University of La Verne baseball team completed the series sweep of Whittier College in SCIAC action Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field in Whittier.  A solid outing from Phil Schick and multi-hit performances from six different Leopards would propel the Leos past the Poets in a 8-2 final.

Whittier would take its only lead of the game when the Poets' Ben Cerami homered in the bottom of the second to give the home team an early 1-0 lead.  However, the Leopard offense would ignite to score in the next six innings highlighted by a three-run sixth inning.

Leopard starting pitcher Phil Schick would settle in after the second-inning homer to go 7.2 innings, striking out seven and giving up two runs, one earned while allowing just five hits.  Brett Early and Javi Iniquez would combine for 1.1 innings of relief work to secure the La Verne victory.

Nick Bergara was the catalyst for the Leopards' three-run sixth inning, doubling down the right field line to score Cody Hazel and Jared Hovsepian.  Bergara would then score on a single by La Verne designated hitter Pedro Espinoza.

George Hanna and Jason Moralez were both 3-5 on the day with Espinoza going 3-4.

The Leopards improve to 18-9 overall and 12-6 in conference play.  With the series sweep, La Verne moves into sole possession of third place in the SCIAC standings. The Leos will resume SCIAC play Friday against Occidental at Mt. San Antonio College beginning at 7:00 pm.
