Leopard men's basketball team takes loss at Redlands

REDLANDS- The University of La Verne men's basketball squad took a 65-52 defeat at the University of Redlands Saturday.

The Leopards (5-8, 2-3 SCIAC) kept it close for much of the first half, including a 10-3 run less than ten minutes into the game that gave La Verne a 17-13 lead. But the Bulldogs (7-7, 3-2 SCIAC) finished with a 10-3 run of their own to carve out a 28-21 advantage at the break. The Leos battled in the second half, including a 13-point effort from sophomore guard Weston Newell, but were unable to close the deficit in the second half. 

Newell's 13 points led the Leopard offense. Senior guard Ron See added five assists and six points, while four Leos grabbed four rebounds apiece. Freshman guard/forward Kendall McClain chipped in eight points. 

The Leos shot 37 percent (20-54) from the floor to Redland's 42.1 percent (24-57). They were outrebounded by the Bulldogs 40-34 and held a slim disadvantage in turnover margin (15-11). The Leopard bench contributed 32 points.

La Verne returns to action on Wednesday in Orange with a road matchup against Chapman University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
