The University of La Verne men's soccer team hosted the Sagehens
from Pomona-Pitzer but fell in a close 2-1 finish. With the loss,
the Sagehens now hold have a one game advantage atop the SCIAC
standings.
While both teams had good looks at the goal, neither was able to
connect until the final 2 minutes of the half when Robbie Hull
scored the first goal of the match, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead
heading into halftime.
Physical play increased in the second half, and as a result, La
Verne would be awarded a penalty shot which Ruben Trujillo would
finish off, tying the game at 1-1. A foul gave the Sagehens a
chance to answer back with a direct kick, but a wall of Leopard
defenders blocked the shot, and Pomona-Pitzer was awarded a corner
kick. Daniel Nasry lofted a ball right to teammate Wynn Sullivan,
and the Sagehens would retake the lead.
The Leopards came close to scoring on several occasions,
including Andrew Geenen's direct shot that hit the top of the
crossbar and Taylor Hart's header that sailed over the goalie, but
was saved at the last minute by a Pomona-Pitzer defender. The score
would remain the same, and the Leopards would drop a 2-1 final.
Trujillo tallied his third goal of the season, becoming La Verne's
leading scorer on the year.
La Verne falls to 3-2 in conference, and is now tied for third in
the standings with the University of Redlands. The Leopards will
host the Kingsmen from Cal Lutheran University this Saturday at Ben
Hines Field. The match will begin at 11 am.
