The University of La Verne men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 final
against the visiting Kingsmen from Cal Lutheran University Saturday
afternoon at Ben Hines Field.
Raul Yepez was able to get the Kingsmen on the board early with a
goal from a direct kick. The Leopards would answer back in the 28th
minute when Bryan Mejia crossed the ball to teammate Ruben
Trujillo, who then finished with a header.
A 1-1 halftime score would not last long, as Cal Lutheran's Brad
Hendrickson scored off a deflection by goalie Ryan Thompson. The
Kingsmen would strike two minutes later, as Dirk Onink would give
Cal Lu a two goal lead. Ryan McDermott added to the lead in the
83rd minute with an unnassisted goal of his own. The Leopards
stepped up their offensive intensity, resulting in eight second
half corner kicks. However, La Verne was unable to connect on the
attempts, and would suffer a 4-1 loss.
Trujillo netted his fourth goal of the season, and has scored in
four of the last five games.
The Leopards will try to stop a two-game skid as they take on the
Bulldogs in Redlands next Wednesday night. The match will begin at
7 pm.
