The University of La Verne men's tennis squad defeated the visiting Caltech Beavers, 8-1, Saturday afternoon at the Claremont Tennis Club.
ULV earned their first conference victory of the year while improving to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCIAC.
After taking all doubles contests, the Leopards produced five wins in singles action. At No. 1, Mario Backes got off to a quick start in taking set one, 6-1. Backes then closed out the match 6-3 in the second set to beat Beaver Ilia Shadrin.
Singles No. 2 through 6 landed the Leopards' way, as well. Alex Murasan topped Karthik Narsimhan with 6-4, 6-2 scores at No. 2 while J.P. Arreglado earned a triumph in No. 3 with a strong 6-2, 6-0 result over Rico Chiu. Joe Manfre won his contest 6-3, 6-1.
The Leopards next face Whittier College in Whittier on Friday, February 15, at 2 p.m. before traveling to Cal Lutheran the following day for a 9:30 a.m. start.
