Nationally Ranked Leopards Stay Undefeated In SCIAC Play With Road Victory Over Cal Lutheran

Thousand Oaks, CA - The University of La Verne women's basketball team headed off to face Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California.

As the end of the regular season approaches, the Leopards looked to keep their undefeated record in conference play. The Leopards got out to an early double-digit lead. The Regals brought the game within six points, but La Verne went on a run to end the half leading by eight points. After many attempts by the Regals to cut the lead, the Leopards prevailed and won 66-53. The Leopards outscored the Regals in points off turnovers 29-6. La Verne only had 12 turnovers for the game, while the Regals had 23. Head coach Jason Pruitt was pleased with his team's performance on the road. "The good, the bad, the ugly! You take conference road wins any way you can get them.  Total team effort, we played a lot of people tonight due to early foul trouble.  The people that came in the game, did their job.  That's all you can ask.  Our coaching staff needs to spend more time preparing the bench for crucial situations.  You never know when it's your turn to play. This could have been a trap game for us. They slowed it down against us and sometimes that can be frustrating when you aren't playing at the pace you want. But I thought our ladies came out and did a great job.  The thing with this team is regardless of whether the offense is going for us or not, we're still going to defend no matter what. We've learned we can rely on our defense to keep us in games. Whenever we get the ball contained at half-court, we're pretty good defensively.  We have great principles; our coaches show the players where they need to be in positions. We know once we stop teams from getting in fast-break situations, we feel like can hold anybody in half-court. Thank God for watching over both teams and keeping us injury free.  We will hit the court tomorrow and prepare for Saturday."

The Leopards were led by sophomore Marissa Howell, with 17 points and four assists. Dawson Bell and Chiara Brown had 14 points, each continuing to dominate with their inside play. Jazzlyn Johnson contributed off the bench with 11 points in 27 minutes. The Leopard's next game will be against Pomona Pitzer at The Tents Saturday, February 11, at 2 PM
