After 10 days of rest, the University of La Verne women's soccer
team hosted their first conference game of the 2009 season against
the Tigers from Occidental College, but fell in a 1-0 decision.
Both teams struggled to get their offense going in the beginning
of the game. The Tigers would take a few shots on goal, but would
be denied by goalkeeper Bridgette Jennings, who recorded three
saves in the game. Occidental finally found an opening, as senior
midfielder Elise Devereux intercepted a pass and found the back of
the net in the 29th minute. La Verne took three shots in the first
half, but were unable to score, and would trail 1-0 after the first
period of play.
Physical play increased after halftime, as both teams combined for
10 of the 14 overall fouls in the second half. As a result, three
yellow cards were given (Oxy: Devereux, Falkler-Rodriguez; LV: J.
Ramirez) on top of the yellow card given to La Verne's Falisha
Ramirez in the first half. The Leopards would have good looks at
the goal, particularly in the last two minutes of the game, in
which they received two corner kicks. Despite their best efforts,
the Tigers would find a way to clear the ball, and the game would
end in a 1-0 final in favor of Occidental.
With the loss, the Leopards move to 0-1 in conference play (1-1
overall), while the Tigers improve to 1-0 (3-1 overall).
Next Saturday, the Leopards head to Claremont where they will take
on the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The match will begin at
11:00am.
