Leopards trounce Whittier in women's soccer action

WHITTIER- The University of La Verne women's soccer squad earned a 3-0 league win over Whittier College Wednesday evening.

Leopard rookie forward Alexa Smith opened up the scoring in the 24th minute to give La Verne a 1-0 lead heading into the second half. Smith sparked another goal in the second half, providing the assist for a strike from junior defender Dina Tominna in the 59th minute. Senior forward Marisella Macias extended the Leo advantage to three with an insurance goal 11 minutes later. 

Macias led the La Verne offense with these shots. Junior Delanie Pacheco and freshman Heather Seman split the goalkeeping duties in the clean sheet effort. Pacheco had four saves in the first 75 minutes of work.

The Leopards held a 12-11 advantage in shots fired and earned four corner kicks to Whittier's seven. La Verne improved to 9-9-1 overall and 6-6-1 in SCIAC play while the Poets fell to 1-17 and 1-12 in league action. 

The Leos will conclude their season Saturday with a road match at Chapman University in Orange, Calif. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
