Baseball Falls to CLU, Drops Back to a Three-Way Tie

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Mark Jebbia hit his first home run of the season, but Cal Lutheran used a five-run third inning to beat the University of La Verne baseball team, 10-5, on Sunday at the Ullman Stadium.

La Verne slips to 14-13 in SCIAC play and with Occidental's and Redlands' wins, falls back into a three-way tie for fourth place in the standings. La Verne now needs a win against Caltech and an Oxy loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Tuesday to secure a playoff spot. Oxy owns the tiebreaker by virtue of taking two of three from La Verne earlier in the season.

The bottom of third inning started innocuously enough. After a groundout to start the inning, Nicho DellaValle drew a walk. Then Cal Lutheran put together three singles, a walk and a bases-loaded double in consecutive at bats to push across five runs and take a 6-0 lead.

Jebbia immediately got the Leopards back in the game in the top of the fourth. After Ben White walked and Pedro Espinoza singled, the junior left fielder pulled one deep over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 6-3.

The Leopards got within 7-5 with an RBI double from Joe Winterburn and a single by White in the fifth, but that was all they would manage for the game.

The Kingsmen added two in the sixth on a double by Chris Whitmer and another in the eighth on a triple by Austin Kay to seal the win.

Jebbia was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run.

Wintburn was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Brett Early struck out five in 2.2 innings of relief.

Six Kingsmen had two hits each and Gabe Gunter led the way with three RBI. Cal Lutheran's Nos. 3-6 hitters went 8-for-16 with nine runs scored.

Landry Kiyabu picked up the win for the Kingsmen, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Scott Peters.

La Verne takes on Caltech on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the North Field.
