CLAREMONT, Calif. — With the University of La Verne football team trailing the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens by seven points with four seconds remaining in the game, the Leopards had one last shot to tie the game. Quarterback Josh Evans connected with DaeJohn Logan, but he was stopped just short of the goal line, placing the final at 28-21.

The Leopards' defense came through with big plays throughout the game. Late in the first half with the Sagehens leading 7-0 and lining up for a field goal, Jose Aguero blocked the kick, scooped up the ball, and ran it back for a 94 yard touchdown. Eric Rembecky added the point after to tie the game 7-7.

Later on the Sagehens' opening drive of the second half, Auguero game up big again, picking off a pass by Karter Odermann to set up La Verne at the Pomona-Pitzer 32 yard line. Rembecky converted a 24 yard field goal to put the Leopards within four, 14-10.

After the Leopards and Sagehens traded another pair of scores to put the game at 21-13, freshman Andrew Camargo forced another huge turnover, intercepting a pass from Ewards Sias at La Verne's 39 yard line. 

Rushes by Parker Martin and James Gonsalves moved the Leopards down the field until Gonsalves capped off the 10-play drive with a four yard rushing touchdown to put his squad within two points.

On the two-point conversion, Evans scrambled to his right and found Grayson Kline in the end zone. Kline just got his feet inbounds to tie the game 21-21. 

Sias connected with Nick Kapule to put Pomona-Pitzer back up with just over six minutes to play.

Gonsalves carried the load offensively for the Leopards. The running back carried the ball 23 times for 132 yards on the ground, the highest single-game total for a Leopard this season, and a touchdown. Michael Medina added 41 yards on the ground.

Evans passed for 134 yards on 17 completions. Kline led the Leopards with seven receptions for 47 yards.

Connor Truhitte and Robert Bagley III each totaled 11 tackles. Bagley also added a sack.

Season Impact: The Leopards move to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 3-4 and 2-3.

Next Game: La Verne will play their final team of the 2017 season next Saturday when they host the Whittier College Poets at 1 p.m. The Leopards will honor the seniors on their squad in a brief pregame ceremony.
