The University of La Verne men's basketball squad put the finishing touches on its 2012-13 campaign by defeating Caltech 65-49 in the regular season finale Tuesday night in Pasadena.
Junior guard Alonzo Young enjoyed a breakout game for the Leopards with a game-high 22 points, finishing 7-13 from the field and 8-10 from the free throw line. Young came within one rebound of a double-double as he totaled nine boards on the evening.
La Verne held a 31-25 advantage early in the second half before a 10-0 run capped by a Young layup and free throw boosted the lead to 41-25 with 14:16 remaining. From there, the Leopards maintained their double-digit cushion and would lead by as many as 19 points.
Despite shooting 37.7% from the field (20-53), the Leopards thrived from the free throw line, making 21 of their 29 attempts (72.4%)
Jake Vieth added 15 points for the Leopards while Jourdan Simmonds tallied 14 points. Ronn See posted a game-high 10 rebounds. Alex Wolpe also flirted with a double double by recording nine points and nine rebounds.
KC Emezie led Caltech (1-23, 0-16) with 14 points with Andrew Hogue adding nine in the loss as the Beavers wrapped up their season.
After a 1-10 start during the 2012 portion the schedule, the Leopards reversed fortune and compiled a 10-4 mark since the beginning of the New Year.
With the win the Leos locked up a tie for fourth place in the SCIAC standings with a 9-7 league mark.
