Reed Taking Part In Basketball Camp in Hawaii

La Verne head basketball coach Rich Reed is currently spending his week in Hawaii, but not necessarily for the sun, surf and sand associated with our 50th state.

Reed is in the Aloha State for hoops, taking part as a staff member at the Maui Sports Academy (MSA) Basketball Exposure Camp, held this week (June 19-23) at Kalani High School in Oahu.

The camp's objective is to provide quality sports instruction for the youth of Hawaii through camps and clinics while providing an environment conducive to learning at the highest level of competition possible.

"To be able to work with the top players in Hawaii is truly an honor," said Reed.  "Furthermore being around other college coaches gives me an opportunity to trade ideas with the best in the business."

The coaches at the MSA Basketball Camp has a distinct La Verne flavor.  Along with Reed, staff members include former Leopard Brendan Hallinan ('09), currently an assistant coach at East Los Angeles College.  In addition, the staff includes native Hawaiians Jourdan Simmonds and Josiah Sukumaran, both of whom were members on the 2012-13 Leopard squad.

During his tenure at La Verne, Reed has coached six players from Hawaii.  He views the area as a primary base of his recruiting efforts as he continues to reach out to prospects from the islands.

"We have had tremendous success with players from Hawaii and working this camp allows our program to further enhance our brand in the Aloha State," said Reed.  "I look forward to continue to recruit on a national level, but in order to have success you must recruit your backyard, and we consider Hawaii to be in our backyard."
