Leopards Compete At Franson Last Chance

LA VERNE, CA – The Leopards track & field team competed at the Franson Last Chance Meet at Azusa Pacific on Friday and Saturday and had solid results.

Friday’s top performance was turned in by TK Berhe. He broke his own school record in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:30.96. Zachary Reid ran a season best time of 14.55 in the 110 meter high hurdle preliminaries and was the only Division III athlete to qualify for Saturday’s final. David Lara set a personal best in the javelin throw with a toss of 49.28m (161-8). Ivan Estrada ran a season best of 11.30 in the 100 meters. Three Leos competed in the 800 meters. Jared Albaugh ran 1:59.02, Zyeir Shabete ran 1:59.41 and Andres Flores-Marquez ran a personal best of 2:03.59.

Reid finished sixth in Saturday’s 110m high hurdle final with a time of 14.78. Joshua Collier ran his second fastest time of the season with a 53.40 mark in the 400 intermediate hurdles. Tyler Thomas tied his second fastest time of the season in the 200 meters with a mark of 21.53. Also competing in the 200 were Estrada (22.47) and Austin Haines (season best 23.07).

The Leopards will compete again next Thursday at the Redlands Final Qualifier. The meet, which will take place at the University of Redlands, will be the last chance for athletes to secure qualifying marks for the NCAA Division III National Championships. The top 22 entered marks after next Thursday will qualify for the national meet. Collier and Berhe are both currently ranked in the top 22. Collier is 13th in the 400 intermediate hurdles and Berhe is 21st in the 10,000 meters. Reid is only 0.07 seconds from the top 22 in the 110m high hurdles and Thomas is only 0.17 seconds outside the top 22 in the 200 meters.
