DeAngelo knocks in five to lead La Verne past Whitworth 9-2 in Game 1

LA VERNE, Calif. — Angelica DeAngelo went 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBI as the La Verne softball team beat Whitworth 9-2 in the first game of a doubleheader against Whitworth on Friday at Campus West softball field. The Leopards dropped the nightcap 6-0.

La Verne got the bats going early in the first game and DeAngelo led the charge. In the bottom of the second, the junior mashed her first home run of the season to give the Leopards a 4-0 lead and with the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the third, drilled a line drive towards the left field fence to clear the bases.

Samantha Morales followed DeAngelo with a double to give the Leopards a commanding 8-0 lead.

Michelle Silva broke Whitworth's scoring seal with a lead-off solo homer in the top of the fourth but Hayley Jaquess retired the next three batters to nip a rally in the bud. The Pirates added a run in the fifth but that was all they would get.

Jaquess (2-0) earned her second win of the season, striking out four while giving up one run.

Alexis Schiff, who blasted three homers against St. Katherine on Wednesday, stayed red-hot and opened the scoring with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first. She finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Elisa Ponce took over in the fifth inning and finished the game. She struck out four and scattered three hits in thre innings.

Miranda Ramirez and Allie Rude each went 2-for-2 at the plate for Whitworth.

The Pirates' Madi Perez quieted La Verne's bats in the second game. The Whitworth starter struck out six and gave up just two hits in six innings to earn the win.

Whitworth put together back-to-back doubles with two outs in the first inning to get out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back.

Ponce took over for Jaquess after the doubles and managed to keep the deficit from getting larger until the fifth inning when Silva hit a three-run homer to give the Pirates a 5-0 lead. Whitworth tacked on another run in the sixth on an RBI single by Allie Rude and Sarah Ballinger retired the Leopards in order in the seventh.

Carly Condon and Michelle Deguzman notched the only hits for La Verne.

The Leopards are back in action next Friday against George Fox.
