Softball sweeps Occidental

LOS ANGELES — The University of La Verne softball team finished with 16 hits on their way to a pair of road wins against the Occidental College Tigers Saturday afternoon.

Season Impact: The Leopards improve to 11-3 overall and remain in first place in the conference with a 7-1 SCIAC record. La Verne has won seven in a row and nine of their last 10 games. Occidental drops to 5-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the SCIAC.

Game One: La Verne 10, Occidental 0 (Five Innings)

Carly Condon and Sienna Kendricks each finished with three hits and the Leopards scored nine runs in the first three innings to win game one.

Condon led La Verne three RBI, three runs scored, a triple, and a double. Katheryn Navarro added her team-leading fifth home run of the season when she hit a two-run shot in the second inning.

The Leopards wasted no time getting on the board with their first four batters reaching base safely. With the bases juiced and Justice Borden at the plate, the third baseman singled to left to bring in Condon for the opening 1-0 lead. Shelby Tevis added to the lead with an RBI of her own.

La Verne continued to roll in the second. Sienna Kendricks scored on a passed ball before Navarro's long ball put the Leopards up 5-0.

The Leopards poured on four more runs on in the third off an RBI single by Kendricks that brought home Mikayla Mendoza and a triple by Condon that scored Michelle Deguzman, Kendricks, and Toni Lozano.

Haley Gomez added the finisher in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout that scored Condon.

Jiana Rojo scored her scored her third win of the season after dealing four innings in the circle, giving up just two hits while striking out three.  Ashley Caro stepped in fifth, putting down the only three batters she saw.

Game Two: La Verne 6, Occidental 2

Tevis and Deguzman each finished with a pair of RBI and hits as the Leopards finished the sweep against Oxy.

Tevis left the yard in the top of the sixth hitting a two-run homer to extend the Leopards' lead to four runs. La Verne leads the SCIAC with 13 home runs this season.

Navarro pitched a gem for La Verne. She allowed just one hit, struck out three, gave up no earned runs while walking just two batters. Caro stepped in for the final two innings without allowing a runner on base. 

Angelica DeAngelo added an RBI in the third to put La Verne up 2-0. Three batters later, Deguzman doubled to left center to extend the Leopards' lead to 4-0.

Mackensie Priley and Cora Roberts each finished with an RBI for the Tigers.

Next Game: La Verne takes a break from SCIAC action and travels to Seguin, Texas for a slate of six games. The Leopards open up against Messiah on Thursday, March, 15 in a doubleheader beginning at noon. They'll continue the following day with a doubleheader against Texas-Dallas on Friday and a pair of games versus Texas Lutheran on Saturday.
