Argelander, McAteer Set School Records on Final Day of Invite

LOS ANGELES, — Jessica Argelander and Brian McAteer led the University of La Verne swim and dive teams on the final day of the Collegiate Winter Invite with record-setting performances.

Argelander, who swam the second-fastest Leopard time ever in the 50-yard freestyle on Friday, followed it up with an outstanding race in the prelims of the 100-yard freestyle. The senior finished with a record-setting time of 52.74, beating Melanie Consiglio's time of 53.40 set at the 2015 SCIAC Championships. Argelander followed up the historic race with a win in the finals (52.89) later in the evening.

Brian McAteer made history for the Leopards in the 100-yard individual medley. The junior transfer clocked in with a time of 55.66 for second place. McAteer added a seventh-place finish in the 200 breaststroke later in the evening with a time of 2:16.39. In the women's 100 IM, Isabella Cheng took 10th at 1:09.96.

Trevor Ichiki added a top-three finish for the Leopards touching third in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:59.13, following behind only NCAA Division II swimmers.

Lorenzo De Leon added a third-place finish of his own in the 200-yard backstroke. The junior came in as the top D-III swimmer with a time of 1:56.17. Alondra Camacho had a solid race in the women's 200 backstroke, ending in eighth place with a time of 2:14.02. Ashley Meza followed in 10th place with a time of 2:25.53.

Roxanna Ramirez took eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:49.42. Carli Willis led the Leopards in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:22.54 with Samantha Szok following in eighth place at 2:30.69.

In the men's 400-yard freestyle relay, the Leopards took eighth with De Leon, McAteer, Ichiki, and Cristian Gonzales combining for a time of 3:23.55. On the women's side, Argelander, Camacho, Meza, and Ramirez finished in eighth place at 3:48.60.

Off the boards, Kira Degelsmith took sixth in the women's one-meter dive with a score of 163.35 and Izel Varela ended in ninth place with a final score of 110.45.

The Leopards finished the meet in third place, NCAA Division II Biola won the invite and D-II Concordia took second.

Next Race

The Leopards will have a layoff of the rest of 2019 and return to action on Saturday, January 11 with a SCIAC home meet against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Diving is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.m with swimming slated for 11 a.m.
