The University of La Verne dropped its the first game of the Hampton Inn Classic, falling to Puget Sound by a 59-46 verdict Saturday in Santa Cruz.

La Verne (2-2) trailed 29-24 at the half and were outscored 30-22 in the final 20 minutes.  The Loggers excelled from the free throw line in the second half by connecting on 15 of their 19 charity stripe attempts.  Puget Sound's bench also proved effective in outscoring the Leopard reserves 21-9. 

Cold shooting hampered the Leopards as they were limited to a 29% effort from the field and 17.9% from behind the three-point line. 

Kelsey McKinnis led the Loggers (5-1) with a game-high 19 points. She also had seven rebounds. 

Tyne McClure led the Leopards in scoring with 11 points. She also had seven boards to lead the team. Brittni Tapia made three of La Verne's five three-points attempts on her way to nine points.

The trio of Amanda Copas, Lindsey Foster and Riki Murakami tallied eight points each for the Leopards.

La Verne will conclude action at the Hampton Classic on Sunday as it takes on George Fox in a 12:00 pm tip-off.
