Boxscore

In a meeting of first and second place teams, the University of La Verne saw its four-game win streak come to an end at the hands of Cal Lutheran University as the Regals won a 110-95 shootout over the Leopards in SCIAC women's basketball action Saturday evening in Thousand Oaks.

The two teams combined for 205 points in the highest-scoring conference game to date this season.  The contest featured 11 ties and six lead changes.  Though the Leopards thrived from the perimeter hitting on 19 three-pointers on the night, the Regals countered on the interior by scoring 66 points in the paint.

The Regals (13-2, 6-1) were paced by forward Starla Wright, who went 15-of-20 from the field to post a game-high 34 points.

La Verne (8-6, 5-1 SCIAC) trailed nearly the entire first half with the Regals leading by as many as eight points during the first 20 minutes of action.  The Leopards only lead during the opening stanza came on a three-pointer from Brittni Tapia to put La Verne on top 30-29 at 8:39.  CLU regained control and led 45-38 before three-point baskets from Megan Musashi and Tapia followed by a jumper from Tyne McClure tied the game at 48.  Erica Whitley responded with a jumper in the final minute to provide the Regals with a 50-48 edge at the break.

Cal Lutheran bolstered its efforts by making 25 of its 35 field goals (71.4%) in the second half to take over sole possession of first place in the league standings.

La Verne's last lead came with 16:44 left to play when Amanda Copas scored on a layup for a 60-58 Leopard advantage.  The Regals took the lead for good on a layup from Wright to put CLU up 68-66 at the 13:28 mark.  Wright's basket triggered a 10-3 run which provided the Regals with a 76-69 lead.

The Leos responded with a 9-3 run, capped by a four-point play from Lina Arreola to get within a point at 79-78.

However, CLU reclaimed control of the contest and stretched its margin during the late stages.  The Regals would close out by hitting nine of their last 10 shots.

Jazmyne Porter added 21 points for the Regals while Channing Fleischmann contributed with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Copas paced the Leos in scoring with 17 points while collecting 8 rebounds. Arreola and Lindsey Foster added 13 points each.  Kimmie Fung and Tapia totaled 12 points and 11 points, respectively.

La Verne returns to the hardwood Thursday night as it plays host to Caltech at Frantz Athletic Court.  Tip-off is 7:30 pm.
