La Verne Edged By Poets in 8-7 Thriller

The University of La Verne women's water polo faced Whittier College in the seventh place match of the 2013 SCIAC Water Polo Championships in Pasadena.  Ultimately, the momentum would tip in favor of the Poets, resulting in an 8-7 defeat for for the Leopards in a game which featured 32 exclusions.

La Verne came out aggressive on all fronts, immediately tallying a trio of goals in the first frame while holding Whittier to just one goal.  Alex Gudeneau, Stephanie Tuning, and Nicole Tuning would all strike the net to help the Leopards take the 3-1 lead.

The momentum would slowly begin to shift in the second quarter as Whittier outscored La Verne 4-1 to take a 5-4 lead into the half.

After the half both squads would record a pair of goals with S. Tuning adding another goal of her own to keep her squad close, however, Whittier would continue to hold on and take a 7-6 advantage into the final frame.  Maddie Lovrensky would come through to knot the match at 7-7 with her goal at the 6:48 mark in the fourth. 

Both Whittier and La Verne would spend the next five minutes warding off each other's attack on the goal but the Poets' Natalie Halvorsen-Herrera would net the game winning goal with 1:43 left in the contest. The winning goal came on a 6-on-5 advantage.

With the defeat, La Verne concludes the 2013 campaign 12-24 overall.
