Baseball Lands Five on All-SCIAC

PASADENA, Calif. — Five members of the University of La Verne baseball team were named to All-SCIAC Teams, the conference office announced on Thursday. Pitcher/outfielder Mark Jebbia and catcher Joe Winterburn earned First Team recognition while pitcher Kevin Knight, first baseman Ben White and second baseman George Hanna earned Second Team honors.

Junior Jebbia emerged as one of the best pitcher-batter in the conference this season to receive his first All-SCIAC honor. Jebbia has been the best pitcher for La Verne this season, going 7-5 with 3.68 ERA with 67 strikeouts in team-high 85.2 innings. At the plate, he hit .320 with one home run and 21 runs batted in.

Winterburn, a senior transfer from Division I UC Santa Barbara and son of head coach Scott Winterburn, immediately became one of the best players in the conference. Winterburn hit .350 with 13 doubles, seven home runs, 54 RBI and 41 runs. He stole five bases for good measure.

Senior Knight was a dependable presence on the mound, going 4-3 with a 4.44 ERA and 54 strikeouts. This is Knight's second All-SCIAC honor. The Orange, Calif., native was a First Team selection last year.

Senior Hanna was once again rock solid in the middle of the infield for the Leopards, collecting his third straight Second Team honors. Hanna batted .331 with a home run, 34 RBI and eight doubles. He was excellent with his glove as well, posting a .953 fielding percentage while helping turn a team-high 22 double plays.

White, who missed the 2013 season due to injury, made an immediate impact in his first season. White posted team-highs .388 batting average and .497 on-base percentage while driving in 31 runs. He also hit three home runs and will go down in La Verne history books as the first player to hit a home run at the Ben Hines Field on Campus West.

La Verne made the SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the first time this season, but was eliminated after losses to Cal Lutheran and Whittier.
