La Verne Quick Hits

• La Verne opens play in the NCAA Baseball Championship West Regional Wednesday at 10 a.m. PT against No. 24 Texas-Tyler. The Leopards are the No. 6 seed in the region while the Patriots are the No. 1 seed.

• La Verne is making its 10th appearnce in the NCAA Tournament and first since 2012.

• Three of the regional opponents are ranked Top 25 in the latest NCBWA/D3baseball.com poll. Trinity is ranked 18th, Linfield is 19th and Texas-Tyler is 24th. Whitworth and Millsaps are just outside of the rankings with each receiving votes.

• A total of 56 teams were selected to compete in the regional playoffs. All eight regional tournaments – four six-team sites and four eight-team sites – feature a double-elimination format.

• The Leopards finished the season with a 24-18 record and claimed their first SCIAC Postseason Tournament Championship since its inception in 2013.

• La Verne is ranked 14th nationally in fielding percentage at .969

Javi Iniguez leads the nation in games started; he posted a 7-2 record and a 4.19 ERA on the season. He has been at his best on the road, going 4-0 with a 2.90 ERA in away games.

Nick Byrd has been the Leopards' ace out of the bullpen. He pitched 7.2 scoreless innings in relief to lead the Leopards past the Kingsmen, 4-2, and capture the 2015 SCIAC Baseball Postseason Tournament Championship. In all, he turned in 13 multi-inning relief outings, compiling a 5-4 record and six saves with a 2.59 ERA

Ben White was second in the SCIAC in RBI (48), fifth in batting average (.389), second in triples (6), third in total bases (98) and second in slugging percentage (.658).

• La Verne is ranked second in the nation in sacrifice bunts with 72 and Tyler Watkins is tied for first individually with 15.
