Kingsmen Overtake the Leopards

The University of La Verne's men's soccer team (5-2, 3-2 SCIAC) was defeated in double overtime Monday night against Cal Lutheran (6-1-1, 4-0-1 SCIAC).

The two SCIAC teams were tied for first as they battled for the sole spot at the top of the leader board.  This intense match led to a mixture of 45 shots, 38 fouls, and seven yellow cards in a combined effort from both teams.

At the 51-minute mark, La Verne took the lead when freshman forward Saul Uribe (4 shots on the day) scored off a pass by senior midfielder David Gonzalez that he crossed from the right side of the field. Eight minutes later, La Verne fouled the Kingsmen inside the box providing Cal Lutheran with a penalty kick opportunity. Cal Lutheran took advantage and tied up the game.

Into the first overtime the Leopards took multiple shots on goal but were unable to connect. At the 91-minute mark the Kingsmen rallied, putting the Leopards on the defensive in a 3-on-1 situation.  But utilizing strong play, La Verne's defense shut down the offensive maneuver. Then, at the 98th minute mark, La Verne drilled a shot towards the corner of the goal only to be denied by Cal Lutheran's goalkeeper, Jack Duncan.

The second overtime was just as exciting as the first, with shots exchanged by both sides.  But with 8-seconds left in double overtime, Cal Lutheran's Salvador Orozco fired off a 30-yard shot that La Verne's freshman goalkeeper Dylan Roberts (9 saves on the day) was able to temporarily stop - only to have one of the Kingmen tap it in for the game-winning goal.  Cal Lutheran's final shot on goal clinched the match for them with a final score of 2-1.

The Leopards (5-2, 3-2 SCIAC) will compete at home against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College (4-3-1, 3-1-1 SCIAC) this Saturday at 7:00pm.
