Leopard men’s water polo squad wins two

LA VERNE- The University of La Verne men's water polo squad earned a pair victories over the California Institute of Technology and Chaffey College at Las Flores Park Saturday.

The Leopards (5-17) got their first SCIAC victory of the fall campaign in a 16-5 decision over Caltech in a morning contest. La Verne held a 6-1 advantage after one quarter and never looked back, outscoring the Beavers in each remaining frame.

Sophomore attacker Bryan Jimenez and sophomore center Andrew Phillips led the scoring with three goals each while goalie Daniel Newell made 15 saves.

An afternoon tilt with Chaffey followed the same pattern. The Leopards jumped to an 8-3 lead after two periods and outscored the Panthers 6-1 in the final two quarters.

Sophomore driver Matthew Vega led the Leo offense with three goals and Newell made 11 stops.

La Verne is set to face Occidental College in Los Angeles next Saturday at 11 a.m.
