Cerrillos, Johnny lead Cross Country at West Regional

CLAREMONT, Calif. — A pair of freshmen—Rachael Dela Cruz and Christopher Arcos—led the La Verne women's and men's cross country all season long, but a different pair led the Leopards at the 2015 NCAA West Regional, hosted by Occidental, on Saturday.

Melissa Cerrillos finished first among La Verne women with a time of 23 minutes, 39.38 seconds in the six-kilometer race and finished 43rd overall.

Samuel Johnny led the men, finishing 68th overall at 27:58.01.

Dela Cruz and Arcos finished first for the women and the men, respectively, in almost every race this season, but both dealt with injury leading up to Saturday's race. Dela Cruz did start the race but bowed out midway and Arcos did not run.

Miranda Chavez finished 107th overall on the women's side at 26:02.75 and Andrea Valdez crossed the line at 28:04.13.

David Sincock and Tanner Long crossed the finish line shoulder-to-shoulder at 28:29.56 and placed 84th.

Mario Martinez was 100th at 29:09.26 and Marcelo Arcos rounded out the men's lineup at 29:11.73.

The Leopards will have a plenty of room for improvement in the coming years. The men only graduate Sincock and the women's team will return everyone from this year's team.
