Nine-Run Second Powers Leopards Past Pacific

Boxscore

A combination of 10 hits along with six errors from Pacific University allowed the University of La Verne to post 13 runs for the second straight game in recording a 13-9 triumph over the Boxers Friday afternoon in Claremont.

La Verne (3-0) took advantage of a big second inning by plating nine runs in the frame to turn a 2-1 deficit into a commanding 10-2 lead.  Though the Boxers avoided a mercy-rule defeat with four runs in the final two innings, they couldn't escape the wrath of six errors which resulted in six unearned runs.

Making their 2012 season debut, the Boxers opened with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles from Jordan Middlesdorf and Ashley Billingsley.  The Leopards took advantage of two Pacific error to answer with a run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Raven Freret to score Dee Dee Burns.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the second, Daryn Schively doubled down the left field line to score Candice Nunez and Danielle Vela to knot the contest at 3-3.  One out later, Burns hit the Leos' first home run of the season, a shot that cleared the left field fence to give La Verne a 5-3 lead.  With two out, Jackie Duran delivered a 2-run single to score Tara Allis and Amanda Hastings for a 7-3 Leopard cushion.

Candice Nunez would continue the inning with a 2-run double to plate Danielle Vela and Duran, and Daryn Schiveley followed with an RBI double to score Nunez, concluding the nine-run uprising.  Pacific seemed to have suffered from opening-game jitters as they committed three errors in the frame and five in the first two innings.

Though the Boxers added a run in the top of third on a Nikki King double, La Verne posted two more runs courtesy of an Allis RBI single and a run-scoring double from Freret to take a 12-4 lead.

La Verne led 13-5 through four innings and threatened to close out a mercy-rule win only to watch Pacific add a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings.  Carly Asher, who worked the final four innings for the victory, pitched a scoreless seventh.

Schiveley enjoyed a three-hit game with 3 RBI on the day while four other Leos produced two hits.  King led Pacific with a 3-3 day at the plate with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

La Verne opens SCIAC action Saturday as it hits the road to face Whittier College in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm
