Softball Drops Twinbill At CMS

The University of La Verne dropped both games of a doubleheader at No. 22 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, falling 9-1 and 8-0 to the Athenas in SCIAC softball action Friday afternoon in Claremont.

In the opener, the Leopards jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Katherine Kibbe singled to drive in Raven Freret from second base.  The Athenas quickly erased the deficit in the bottom half on a RBI single from Katie Savard to knot the game at 1-1.

CMS starting pitcher Hayley Schultz would hold La Verne scoreless the remainder of the contest.  Offensively, the Athenas add four runs in the bottom of the second, add a run in the third and plate three in the bottom of the sixth to prevail in a 9-1 final.

Janelle Shiozaki helped pace the Athenas with a 3-3 effort at the plate with 3 RBI with Harmony Palmer going 2-3 with 3 RBI. 

In the second game, Athenas starter Shannon O'Neill kept the Leopards off the board in a six-hit performance. 

CMS (13-6, 6-2 SCIAC) would score all of its runs in the third and fourth innings.  In the bottom of the third, the Athenas tallied three runs highlighted by a two-run single by Marie Bradvica to take a 3-0 lead.  Five runs would come across for the Athenas in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run double from Bradvica.

Bradvica finished 2-3 at the plate with 5 runs batted in for CMS.  Laura Olson had the lone multi-hit game for the Leopards with a 2-2 performance.

La Verne (12-6, 6-6 SCIAC) continues league action Saturday when it plays host to Whittier College at Wheeler Park in a conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
