LA VERNE, Calif. — Katherine Kibbe pitched a complete game and cranked a two-run home run to help the University of La Verne softball beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 7-1, in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Campus West.
The Leopards improve to 22-17 overall and 17-10 in SCIAC play. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps falls to 24-11 and 18-9.
Kibbe extended her hitting streak to 17 games with the go-ahead and the game-winning run in the bottom of the first with a single to right and stretched the lead in the third with a homer to left center that also scored Mackenzie Dutton.
The lone run she allowed in the pitcher's circle was an unearned one. La Verne center fielder Raeleen Tellez shot a cannon to home to beat Tara Robinson to the plate, but catcher Rebecca Ireland blocked the plate without getting the ball first and Robinson was allowed to score.
Kibbe kept the Athenas scoreless the rest of the way. The junior did get into some trouble including a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, but came up with clutch strikeouts and induced weak grounders to escape the heat.
Kibbe is sporting a crisp 0.97 earned run average in her last seven starts.
The Leopards offense, who tagged Redlands for 21 runs on 35 hits on Friday, stayed hot. Kibbe finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Alexis Schiff, Amanda Chavez and Raeleen Tellez each recorded two hits. As a team, La Verne collected 12 hits and struck out just once.
