Maddie Lovrensky Wins the SCIAC Female Athlete of the Year in Swimming

COMMERCE – Maddie Lovrensky won the SCIAC Female Athlete of the Year for Swimming and Diving and the University of La Verne swimming and diving team broke more varsity records on the final day of the 2014 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships.

Lovrensky comfortably won the women's 200 backstroke with a meet record time of 2:02.56 and extended her undefeated streak in the backstroke events in the SCIAC. On Day Two, she successfully defended her 100 back title with a time of 56.00.

Lovrensky also swam the backstroke legs of La Verne's record-breaking 400 and 200 medley relays in the championships and was just shy of breaking another one in the 50 freestyle.

"I don't even believe it," Lovrensky said about receiving the honors. "I remember as a freshman seeing these great swimmers win this award and now, well, I'm here. It's great."

 

The La Verne men finished fourth (541.5) and the women finished in sixth (337.5).

Four more school records fell on the final day.

In the morning prelims, Jackie Rojas topped her own school record in the women's 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:28.86 and freshman Daniel Carpenter also bested his own record in the men's 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 46.82. In the women's 200 butterfly, Sammy Shiomoto finished 5th at 2:11.13 and shaved six-one hundredths of a second off Tiffany Martin's old record set in 2009. The men's 400 free relay team of Carpenter, Jarrett Peterson, Viken Huening and Devon Photias broke a 10-year old La Verne record with a time of 3:09.34.

Marc Okimura placed 2nd and made the NCAA "B" cut in the 200 breast with a time of 2:03.66. Mike Sanchez also made the "B" cut in the event at 2:06.48 and freshman Harry Bennett posted a 2:09.34.

In all, the 2014 Leopards broke 16 school records in this year's SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
