COLORADO SPRING, COLO.- The University of La Verne volleyball squad participated in the Colorado College Spike It Up Classic over the weekend.
The Leopards (5-17) were unable to notch a victory on the trip, falling to Hamline University (Minn.) and host Colorado College Friday before a tight match with Nebraska Wesleyan University Saturday and a rematch with Hamline.
La Verne was swept in the first meeting with the Pipers 25-18, 25-21, 25-22. Sophomore outside hitter Brittany Yaxley had 15 kills while freshman setter Tiffany Mancuso recorded a team-high 34 assists and 13 digs.
The Leopards found a rhythm in their first contest Saturday, taking the two sets from the Prairie Dogs 25-19, 25-23, before dropping the next three 25-18, 25-18, 15-12. Yaxley had 23 kills, Mancuso had 52 assists, and Suarez made 19 digs.
A rematch of Friday's match-up with Hamline produced the same results. The Leos endured a three-set loss, 25-23, 25-15, 25-14. Yaxley was again the focal point of the offense with 15 kills, bringing her two-day total to 63. Senior defensive specialist Janelle Lubong contributed 16 assists and Suarez chipped in with 10 digs.
Yaxley was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the weekend.
La Verne will resume its schedule Tuesday, traveling to Thousand Oaks, Calif. for a conference tilt with Cal Lutheran.
