Watkins Named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – Following a pair of Division III-leading times in the 200 and 400 meters, the University of La Verne track and field athlete Chancise Watkins was named the NCAA Division III Men's National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Monday.

Watkins clocked a school-record 21.29 seconds running into a stiff 1.1 m/s headwind to win the 200m on Saturday at the SCIAC Multi-Dual #2.

The Blythe, Calif., native also claimed the 400m with a personal-best time of 47.72.

The individual wins were not Watkins's only accomplishments on the weekend. The senior also ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x100m relay (41.37), which is ranked second in Division III.

Coming off a top-three finish in the 200m at the NCAA Indoor National Championships, Watkins now owns both the Division III's fastest 200 and 400-meter times.

Watkins and the Leopards return to action this weekend at the Cal/Nevada Collegiate Championships in La Jolla.
