Watkins Named SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week

PASADENA, Calif. — After winning three individual championships at the 2014 SCIAC Track and Field Championships, La Verne athlete Chancise Watkins was named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week of April 28–May 4, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

Watkins was the only athlete to win more than two championships at the meet and posted a pair of top Division III times to boot. Watkins claimed the 400 meters with a time of 47.25, which leads the nation by more than four-tenth of a second. La Verne's 4x100 meters relay team with Watkins as the anchor became the only quartet in the country to break the 41-second mark this season, winning the race at 40.84. Finally, Watkins broke the school- and SCIAC record in the 200 meters with a winning time of 21.14, lowering the conference standard set by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Mark Messana in 1987 (21.26) and surpassing his own school record set earlier this season (21.29).

This is the third time this season Watkins has been named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week. He also earned the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Men's National Athlete of the Week honors in March.

Watkins will be a legitimate national championship contender in all of the above three events. The 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be held on May 22-24 at the George Gauthier Track in Delaware, Ohio.
