Moreno, Watkins Named SCIAC Track AOYs; Gillon Newcomer of the Year

PASADENA, Calif. — The accolades keep rolling in for La Verne track and field teams.

After a sensational Spring in which they earned countless honors, Lenore Moreno and Chancise Watkins were named the SCIAC Women's and Men's Track Athletes of the Year, respectively, the conference office announced on Thursday. Freshman sprinter Tiahna Gillon was tabbed the Women's Newcomer of the Year.

Moreno's list of accolades is almost endless. The senior kicked things off this season with a national championship in the 5,000 meters at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in March and was tabbed the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) West Region Indoor Female Track Athlete of the Year.

Moreno has followed with a slew of national top times and records in the outdoor season. On April 4, Moreno shattered her own SCIAC record in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational amongst a field of 75 elite upper-division and professional runners and was named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week. Just a few short weeks later, Moreno broke a 32-year-old SCIAC record in the 5,000 meters at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays. The 10,000m time (33:49.04) is the top time in the nation this season by almost a minute and the 5,000 time (16:28.26) ranks third. Moreno easily claimed the SCIAC championship in the 5,000 meters on May 3.

Watkins also started the year with an All-American performance at the indoor national championships. The senior sprinter finished third in the 200 meters and was named the USTFCCCA West Region Indoor Male Track Athlete of the Year. Watkins was then named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week on March 31 after posting a pair of then-fastest Division III times in the 200 and the 400 meters at the SCIAC Multi-Dual No. 2.

Watkins then put together a complete performance at the SCIAC Championships. Watkins won the 200 meters (21.14), the 400 meters (47.25) and the 4x100 relay, setting personal records in all three events. The 200m time is a SCIAC record and the 400m time is the fastest in Division III this season.

Watkins and Moreno will head to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on May 22-24 with legitimate championship aspirations.

Gillon has emerged as one of the best sprinters in the SCIAC. After getting her feet wet in the early part of the season, everything started to come together for the freshman at the SCIAC Multi-Dual No. 3, where she won the 100 meters and took second in the 200. Gillon then broke through with a pair of winning performances at the SCIAC Championships: She won the 100 meters with a time of 12.22 and ran the second leg of the winning 4x100 relay team. She also took second in the 200m.

In all, the men's team placed 20 athletes on the all-conference team and the women landed 24.
