Leos take both legs of double header

LA VERNE — The University of La Verne Leopards walk-off the Boxers of Pacific Oregon 10-9 in game one and completed the doubleheader sweep in game two 7-2. 

Game One

La Verne got off to an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on a bases loaded walk that brought in Janisa Rojo. However, most of the game the Leopards were trailing. 

Down 5-1 in the 3rd inning, the Leopards cashed in three runs. Led by Rojo's RBI single and capped off by Bailey Grani's RBI single, cutting the deficit to a one run game at 5-4. 

The Leos trailed 7-5 but scored a run in the 5th and 6th to tie the game up at 7-7. Unfortunately, the Leopards gave up two runs in the top of the 7th inning and went into the bottom half of the last inning trailing by two runs. With the Leopards trailing by two runs and down to their final out of the game, they would rally with a Bailey Grani walk followed by a game tying two-run single by Mia Pintado and a walk-off single by Haylee Hsieh scoring Pintado to win game one of a doubleheader 10-9. 

Game Two

The Leopards momentum carried over into game two as they scored three runs on two hits in the first inning to take a 3-1 lead. 

Starting pitcher, Rachel Rubio, would settle in and cruise through 7 innings striking out 4 Boxers along the way allowing only two runs on four hits. Rubio picked up her second win of the season improving to 2-0. 

The Leopards offense would tack on 4 more runs over the rest of the game and win comfortably 7-2. 

Notables

Haylee Hsieh collected 5 hits over the doubleheader (5-9), scored 2 runs, and drove in the game-winning run in the first game of the evening. Janisa Rojo went 4-7 over the doubleheader, scoring twice, and collecting 3 RBIS. Kat Navarro drove in 3 runs and collected 2 hits over the two games. Mia Pintado drove in 3 runs in the first game of the night and scored the game-winning run. Rachel Rubio tossed her second complete game of the season and picked up her second win of the season.

Season Impact

The Leo's started off the season 3-0 for the second time in the past 3 seasons. La Verne will look to continue their winning ways against Brandeis University on Wednesday night for a double header. First pitch scheduled for 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
