Leopards Sweep two-game series against Worcester Polytechnic Institute

La Verne, CA: The University of La Verne Leopards swept a two-game series against Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineers on Tuesday night, winning 4-1 and 14-7. 

 

Game One

The Leopards scored first when Ashely Rodriguez doubled home Hailee Reinert to give La Verne a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The Engineers countered with a run in the top of the 4th inning to tie the game up at 1-1. In the bottom of the 5th inning, La Verne would score three runs. Haylee Hsieh singled in Clarissa Salazar and Rodriguez. Haylee Hsieh would score on a delayed steal of home to give La Verne a 4-1 lead. With the Leo's ace in the circle, Rachel Rubio cruised, retiring the Engineers in order in both the 6th and 7th inning to win the game 4-1. 

 

Game Two 

The Leopards bats came out hot scoring 7 runs on 6 hits in the first inning and scoring 4 runs on 5 hits in the second inning to take a commanding 11-1 lead over the Engineers. The Leopards right fielder, Ashley Rodriguez set the pace, driving in 4 runs in the first two innings on two base hits. WPI battled back scoring 6 straight unanswered runs to bring them within 4 runs. With the score 11-7, the Leopard tacked on 3 more runs of insurance in the bottom of the 6th inning. Natalia Aguilera capped off the scoring with a double in the right center field gap, driving in Mia Pintado to give La Verne a 14-7 lead. Rachel Rubio, came in on relief in the 6th inning, worked the 7th inning and retired the Engineers to secure the Leopards win 14-7.  

 

Standouts

Rachel Rubio picked up her 7th win of the season and 7th complete game, improving to 7-0 on the season. Rubio also pitched two scoreless innings in relief in game two to help close out the Leopards game two win over WPI and earned her 8th win of the season. Ashley Rodriguez led the way offensively, going 5-6 at the plate, driving in 5 runs, and scoring twice. Hailee Reinert collected 4 hits and scored twice in the double header. Haylee Hsieh knocked in 3 runs and scored 3 runs in the two game series. Katheryn Navarro and Alyssa Campbell each hit a home run going back-to-back in game two of the double header. 

 

Next Up

The University La Verne Leopards improved to 10-2 on the season and will be back in action this Thursday as they play host to the University of Rochester Yellowjackets at 3:00 and 5:00 PM.
